OKEY GOES TO SCHOOL

Okey was a 13yr old boy who had never been to school. He grew up following his mother to trade and also joined other boys on the farm.  Luck came his way one day when the local government declared free education only for secondary school (high school) students.

The normal thing is for all beginners to start at the primary school level to learn the basics before proceeding to secondary school. Only secondary education was now free and Okey must go to school. To gain entrance into free secondary school without being rejected due to not having a primary school leaving certificate, Okey stole the good primary school result of a boy. The boy was good in mathematics, English and other subjects. The primary school certificate was also attached. In those days, no pictures were attached to the papers. Okey went to the nearest secondary school to register as a student. Since it was a new school session resumption, many boys and girls also came to register with their valid primary school leaving certificate and results. The crowd was much, since it was free. The teachers were too busy to thoroughly check all papers brought. They simply collected them, placed them in a file for future scrutiny and attention and promptly placed each boy and girl in their proper classes. Okey was not discovered. He was placed in class 1 for new secondary school students just starting.

The class started for the day and all students were asked to introduce themselves. All did including Okey, he could mention his name. The teacher now proceeded to start teaching. Since they were all from primary school, they were all supposed to know simple arithmetic. The female teacher randomly pointed at a boy, Okey, and asked him to come and write the numbers 1-10 on the board.

Okey stood up, collected the chalk and proceeded to the board. Everybody clapped for him. The teacher stepped aside to observe. Then the drama started. Okey looked up and looked down. He looked around and looked back at the board. The students clapped the more for him. Okey walked forward and walked backwards just like popular comedians on stage. The entire class was now very interested. Okey looked at the chalk and wondered. It was not matches. Probably something to eat. He put it in his mouth and tasted it. He quickly spit it out. The taste was not good. The female teacher was beginning to think. She decided to observe him a little more before making conclusions. To help him out, being a mother too, she walked up to him, collected the chalk and used it to write the number 1 on the board. She gave the chalk back to him and asked him to complete the remaining numbers 2-10.

With that, Okey understood. With boldness he walked up to the board and began to rub the chalk on the board just as the teacher did. The only problem he couldn't figure out was why that white short stick like a straight line that came out of the chalk to stand on the board did not come out. An idea came to him. He looked at the head of the teacher standing before him and began to copy what he saw on the board. He was drawing the teacher's head. He did a very bad job. As he drew on the board, the head began to assume the shape of a cockroach, just as they ran around in their backyard at home in the night, but this time, with long ears like the teacher's. Okey was lost in what he was doing and was so happy thinking he was answering the question correctly, after all, he was doing the same thing the teacher did on the board. The commotion and laughter that erupted in the class made him happy, he smiled thinking the students were commending him. The only thing that jolted him was something that hit him on the back, "ye.....", he shouted. The chalk fell, he quickly turned back as more lashes from the teacher's cane landed on him...

Okay ran out of the class, the teacher in hot pursuit....
